PREPARATION OF THE FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE KHULNA WATER SUPPLY PROJECT (PHASE-2)

Water and Sanitation
Southeast and South Asia
Client ADB
Country・Area Bangladesh
To address the challenges faced by Khulna city in its water supply capacity due to increasing salinity and population growth, the project prepared a comprehensive water supply investment program, capacity building within Khulna Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (KWASA), and a thorough evaluation of the city's institutional, financial, and governance aspects to ensure the water supply system's sustainable operation. Three possible options of alternative water supply system were studied to ensure the required quantity and quality of drinking water during the dry season when salinity is high at the Mollahat intake. The study included details of planning, engineering design plans, required land acquisition for each option and the best option was recommended by the consulting team.
PADECO was responsible for (1) Climate change aspects including climate vulnerability and risk assessment and incorporating the findings into the design report; (2) Urban resilience / climate change adaptation workshop and study on nature base solutions such as rainwater harvesting and aquifer recharge; (3) Water supply including assessing the level and quality of the existing services and preparing preliminary engineering designs for the distribution networks; (4) Social, poverty and gender analysis including preparation of social safeguards assessment and due diligence; (5) Environmental baseline assessment and the environmental impact analysis.
