Project to Improve Teaching and Learning Mathematics for Primary Education in the Lao People's Democratic Republic

The Government of Lao PDR aims to graduate from Least Developing Country (LDC) status by 2020, and has therefore identified ensuring access and improving the quality of education as one of the highest priorities for eradicating poverty. This project aims to achieve this objective. The quality of primary mathematics lessons was enhanced in target areas through mathematics educational materials including textbooks, teachers' guides, and teaching/learning materials, through collaboration among the three counterpart departments, the Research Institute of Educational Science (RIES), the Department of Teacher Education (DTE), and the Department of Preschool and primary Education (DPPE). Three outputs were prepared: (i) a Textbook and Teachers' Guide, (ii) Pre-Service Teacher Training (PREST), and (iii) In-Service Teacher Training (INSET).
