Qeshm Island is situated in Strait of Hormuz, which has been classified by the Iranian government as one of six free zones. In addition to holding vast oil and gas resources, the island is geographically important for economic activity and logistics: it functions as a gate for exports and foreign investment. Since the island is also endowed with a rich natural environment, there is great potential for tourism; however, environmental pollution and degradation are growing concerns due to oil and gas field development and tourism promotion. PADECO consultants took part in formulating an “Eco-Island” master plan for the conservation of community livelihoods and natural resources.
