On 9 October 2024, a ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the renovation of Bujumbura Port in Burundi. The ceremony was attended by HE President Evariste Ndayishimiye and other ministers from Burundi, HE Ambassador Isao Fukushima, JICA Director Naoki Ando, and JICA Rwanda Office Chief Representative Minako Shiotsuka (also in Burundi) from Japan.
PADECO undertook consulting services, including detailed design, tender assistance, and construction supervision, for the container terminal, ship maintenance yard, and drainages with ECOH Co., ltd.
The WKK was appointed as the construction contractor, started its work in 2019, and managed to complete the work despite several difficulties, including COVID-19 and the unpredicted increase in Lake Tanganyika's water level.
The Port of Bujumbura is located at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika and is the largest port on the lake, but it was in deterioration. In addition, due to the rapid economic development of neighboring countries, the volume of cargo handled was also increasing, so improving the container terminal, ship repair facilities, and diversion drainage channels will not only promote trade with Burundi but also with neighboring countries reduce transportation costs, and ultimately contribute directly to SDGs targets including 9.1 and 9.a.
From 2012 to 2014, PADECO Co., Ltd. provided support for the formulation of a logistics master plan (JICA technical cooperation project) for Tanzania and Burundi. The improvement of the Bujumbura Port was also proposed in this logistics master plan as part of the development of logistics cores along the Central Corridor that extends from Dar es Salaam to landlocked countries. In addition to this, PADECO provides a full range of services from upstream (planning stage) to downstream (construction supervision and operational support) in the logistics market in the African region, including the harmonization of axle load regulation in the East African Community, the development of human resources to operate border facilities (one-stop border posts; OSBP), and road development in Tanzania and Rwanda.
