In view of the financial deterioration in recent years, the Ecuadorian government is focusing on promoting value-added export of agricultural products such as cacao, frozen vegetables, bananas, farmed shrimp, cut flowers, etc., that complement the acquisition of foreign currency.
The Main export destination of these agricultural products is Western countries. However, the Ecuadorian government has recently focused on diversifying agricultural export products to Asian countries. The government considers exports to Japanese market, which has a large number of middle-class buyers, as a breakthrough for expanding into Asian markets.
The Export Promotion Bureau is seeking a new export promotion business development in Ecuador. Due to the reorganization of the government, the Export Promotion Organization (ProEcuador), which has been promoting exports and foreign direct investments as an independent administrative agency since 2010, was absorbed by the Ministry of Production, Trade, Investment, and Fisheries(MPCEIP), and will oversee export promotion work under the Ministry’s Export Promotion Bureau. Therefore, it requested Japan International Organization Agency (JICA) for technical cooperation to strengthen the Export Promotion Organization (ProEcuador) to carry out their operations more effectively.
PADECO enhanced the planning and implementation capacity of PROECUADOR, a project implemented by the Ministry’s Export Promotion Bureau, which belongs to MPCEIP, to promote exports to Japan and other countries.
PADECO supported the Ministry’s Export Promotion Bureau, which is downsizing after being absorbed by MPCEIP, to strengthen its organization and select products with export potential(Cacao, Guayusa), and to plan and implement export promotion activities focusing on SMEs (pilot project).
