Southeast and South Asia
Client
Japan International Cooperation Agency
Country・Area
Singapore, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka
South Asia has become one of the top regions in the world in terms of economic growth and the region plays an important role in the overseas development of Japanese companies. This study set out several scenarios including economic development, prime industry/supply chain trend, and freight transport scenarios for 2030. The scenarios were formulated in relation to short-, medium-, and long-term objectives for the international arterial maritime transport network in South Asia and clarified directions and possibilities for Japanese assistance for port and maritime transport development in the region. The study focused on maritime and inland water transport including consideration of road and railway transport to/from port hinterlands. The major services PADECO provided included: ・Establishing an economic development scenario based on macroeconomic and industry/freight information taking into account the strategies of private maritime transport companies; ・Establishing freight transport scenarios by region and inputting the results into the freight transport forecast model; ・Examining the possibilities of spatial development related to the hinterland for bulk cargo; and ・Drawing up a long list of both hard and soft projects.
