The cities of Bangladesh are classified into 11 city corporations that play important roles in the economic growth of their respective regions as well as of the country. However, urban infrastructure, especially roads, drainage, and solid waste facilities, is not sufficiently developed, with consequences including heavy traffic congestion, flooding, illegal dumping of solid wastes, and air pollution. This project supported by an official development assistance loan from the Government of Japan included the following tasks: (i) preparation of project operation guidelines; (ii) supervision and management of the implementation of the project and subprojects; (iii) capacity building to enhance project implementation will be enhanced; (iv) capacity development for procurement through training and anti-corruption measures; and (v) clear coordination between the JICA-supported project and the Municipal Governance and Services Project assisted by the World Bank.
